Carl Sagan's Final Message to Mars: A Legacy of Exploration and Wonder
The renowned astronomer and science communicator Carl Sagan left an indelible mark on the world with his passionate advocacy for space exploration. In a heartfelt message recorded before his passing, Sagan addressed the future astronauts who will set foot on Mars, sharing his vision for the Red Planet and the profound impact it could have on humanity.
Sagan, a co-founder of The Planetary Society, believed in the importance of exploring Mars as an analog for Earth, searching for signs of life, and embracing the romance of space exploration. In 1996, he recorded a message for future Mars explorers, expressing his enthusiasm for the mission.
"I'm Carl Sagan. This is a place where I often work in Ithaca, New York, near Cornell University. Maybe you can hear, in the background, a 200-foot [60-meter] waterfall, right nearby, which is probably – I would guess – a rarity on Mars, even in times of high technology," Sagan said in the recording.
Sagan highlighted the symbiotic relationship between science and science fiction, particularly in the context of Mars exploration. He explained how scientific discoveries inspire science fiction writers, who in turn captivate young minds, fostering a new generation of scientists. This cycle has been instrumental in our ability to reach Mars, with pioneers like Robert Goddard playing a pivotal role.

Sagan's final words to the Martian surface were:
"I don't know why you're on Mars. Maybe you're there because we've recognized we have to carefully move small asteroids around to avert the possibility of one impacting the Earth with catastrophic consequences, and, while we're up in near-Earth space, it's only a hop, skip, and a jump to Mars."
