Moses Itauma's shot at the WBA 'regular' heavyweight title belt could be on the horizon, but it might not be as soon as fans expect. Kubrat Pulev, the seasoned Bulgarian champion, is willing to defend his title against the rising British star, but it's not a straightforward process.
Pulev holds the WBA's secondary heavyweight championship, known as the 'regular' title, while the 'super' title is held by the undisputed champion, Oleksandr Usyk. The WBA has mandated a mandatory defense of Pulev's title against Itauma, but Pulev has other plans. He's set to box in Dubai next month and is also scheduled for a December bout with Murat Gassiev, which he considers a voluntary title defense.
Despite this, Pulev's promoter, John Wirt, confirms that Pulev is open to a fight with Itauma if the terms are right. "Kubrat Pulev would be open to a WBA title defense against Moses Itauma, if Moses is ready and willing to take that fight," Wirt stated. "Kubrat is a proud champion, he has accepted all challenges during his career, and he will fight Moses if the terms are right."
Itauma, just 20 years old, has been on a rapid rise in the heavyweight division. He made a name for himself by blitzing Demsey McKean on the undercard of Tyson Fury's rematch with Usyk. More recently, in August, Itauma showcased his prowess by dispatching Dillian Whyte in just one round, propelling him into the realm of world title contention.
The question remains: will Itauma get his shot at Pulev? It's a matter of negotiations and timing, as Pulev's team hasn't ruled out a future contest with the young British talent.
