Adam McKay, director de moda en Hollywood que pasó de dirigir comedias como 'Hermanos por pelotas' a películas nominadas al Oscar como 'La gran apuesta', 'El vicio del poder' y 'No mires arriba', es productor y director del episodio piloto de 'Tiempo de victoria: La dinastía de Los Lakers'. Y se nota.
En el primer capítulo de la nueva serie de HBO Max, en el que vemos como el doctor Jerry Buss trata de adquirir la franquicia de Los Lakers de la NBA y su primer encuentro con Magic Johnson, McKay impone su ritmo frenético y sus diálogos mordaces, muy del estilo del 'Moneyball' de Aaron Sorkin o las sátiras políticas de Armando Iannucci. Los personajes hablan constantemente a cámara rompiendo la cuarta pared y haciendo chistes, y la puesta en escena recuerda constantemente a la época en la que se ambiente la acción, 1979, con una fotografía granulada digitalmente y los encuadres, iluminación, rótulos, etc. dispuestos como si se tratase de una sitcom de la época.
A pesar de tratar sobre la historia real de cómo se formaron Los Lakers del showtime en la década de los 80, ningún protagonista de carne y hueso tiene relación con la serie. Al menos de momento. Pero lo que nos preguntamos, con esta y con otras dramatizaciones que tan de moda están hoy en día como '' o '¿Quién es Anna?', es: ¿Qué hay de cierto en lo que se nos cuenta? ¿Cómo de fieles son sus personajes? Bien, vamos a averiguarlo.
Quincy Isaiah es Magic Johnson

En la primera escena, y a modo de flashforward adelantado en el tiempo, Quincy Isaiah se mete en la piel de Earvin 'Magic' Johnson durante una visita a la clínica Cedars-Sinaí el 5 de noviembre de 1991. Aunque no se explique en el programa de forma explícita, este sería el principio del fin de la carrera de Magic. Durante una revisión rutinaria al comienzo de la temporada 1991-1992, el base de Los Lakers dio positivo en la prueba del virus VIH, anunciando su retirada tan solo dos días después.
Después de la introducción nos vamos a 1979, con Jerry Buss intentando comprar Los Lakers y la guerra entre el blanco Larry Bird y el afroamericano Magic Johnson por ser los mejores novatos de la temporada que comienza. Con Bird ya seleccionado por Boston Celtics, una moneda decidió si Chicago Bulls o Los Angeles Lakers se hacían con el primer puesto en el draft y, por lo tanto, con el derecho a elegir al novato que decidiesen. Aunque Lakers gana el sorteo, la decisión no es fácil. Jerry Buss quiere a Magic, y en la serie vemos cómo intenta convencerlo de una manera amistosa y paternal, mostrándole confianza. Sin embargo la anterior directiva, que todavía mantiene poder, y el actual entrenador Jerry West, leyenda de la NBA, optan por elegir al anotador Sidney Moncrief.
Todas estas dudas provocan que Magic esté a punto de tomar la decisión de permanecer un año más en la universidad de Michigan State, y posponer así su salto al baloncesto profesional. Quizá la resolución al conflicto no fuera tan bonita como en la serie, con Johnson encontrando su camiseta en el vestuario y descubriendo la magia del Forum de Inglewood, mítico pabellón del equipo angelino, pero el caso es que Jerry Buss se salió con la suya y Magic Johnson se convirtió en un Laker.

Jerry Buss es presentado en la Mansión Playboy como un millonario algo excéntrico y alocado, y prueba de ello es que esté dispuesto a desembolsar 67.5 millones de dólares por la franquicia de Los Lakers cuando la NBA está en claro descenso de audiencias y su viabilidad corre peligro. John C. Reilly, actor relacionado con la comedia que sabe ponerse serio cuando toca (nominado al Oscar por 'Chicago'), es el actor que lo interpreta.
Además, Buss estaba empeñado en seleccionar a Magic Johson como novato cuando ya tenían a un base All Star en el equipo (Norm Nixon) y el entrenador Jerry West estaba visible y públicamente en contra. El plan no puedo salirle mejor.

El logo de la NBA Jerry West no sale muy bien parado en el primer capítulo de 'Tiempo de victoria'. Presentado como un muy irascible personaje que grita, golpea y patalea a las primeras de cambio, en el piloto se recuerda además que cuenta con el dudoso honor de ser el único MVP de unas finales de la NBA que fue premiado sin que su equipo se alzase con el campeonato. Una especie de premio de consolación después de numerosos intentos, sin éxito, por acabar con la dinastía de los Celtics de Bill Russell. Lo que no mencionan es que sí que ganó un anillo, en 1972.
Según la serie, West no quiere a Magic Johnson porque es muy alto para ser base, porque no es muy anotador y porque "sonríe demasiado". Todo un visionario el señor West. No llegó a empezar esa temporada como entrenador, sino que cambió su asiento al palco y a los despachos de la franquicia. Aun así, fue una figura clave para los éxitos venideros, sirviendo de apoyo fundamental al que terminó siendo el entrenador que supo llevar al equipo a la gloria: Pat Riley.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird y otros personajes

Lew Alcindor, conocido como Kareem Abdul-Jabbar tras su cambio de religión y de nombre en 1971, había sido el Jugador Mas Valioso de la liga en 1971, 1972, 1974, 1976, 1977 y lo volvió a ser en 1980. Pero a partir de ahí, el testigo fue cambiando a manos de Magic. La serie ahondará en próximos capítulos en la relación entre las dos estrellas dentro y fuera de las canchas. El papel de Abdul-Jabbar supone el debut de Solomon Hughes en la interpretación, y de momento le vemos tan cómodo (es un decir) como al propio Kareem en su cameo en 'Aterriza como puedas'.
La otra gran relación entre jugadores que tratará la serie será de de Magic Johnson y Larry Bird, unidos desde la universidad (Magic le ganó la final universitaria a Bird). Ese primer año con ambos en la liga, Bird fue Novato del Año y Magic MVP de las finales, y durante la década de los 80 se fueron intercambiando títulos de campeón, de Jugador Más Valioso, de All-Stars y de récords de todo tipo. Pero aunque eran rivales en la cancha, siempre mantuvieron una buena amistad fuera de ella. Sean Patrick Small es el encargado de ponerse en la piel del mejor jugador de la historia de Boston Celtics... si no existiera Bill Russell.
