Nigeria's World Cup Dreams Take a Hit: Missing Out on Automatic Qualification
The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a setback in their quest for automatic qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite a commanding 4-0 victory over Benin Republic on October 14, 2025. The match, held at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, showcased the team's attacking prowess with a hat-trick from Victor Osimhen and a late goal from Frank Onyeka.
However, the celebration was short-lived as South Africa's 3-0 win over Rwanda secured their top spot in Group C. This result meant Nigeria had to settle for a place in the CAF playoffs as one of the best second-placed teams.
The Super Eagles started brightly, taking the lead within three minutes through a clever through ball from Samuel Chukwueze to Osimhen, who calmly finished past the Benin goalkeeper. They doubled their lead just before halftime with Osimhen heading home another Chukwueze assist.
After the break, Osimhen completed his hat-trick with a swift reaction to a free-kick, nodding in his third goal of the night. Substitute Frank Onyeka added a fourth in stoppage time, bursting into the box to finish off a loose ball.
Despite the emphatic win, Nigeria's goal difference of +7 and 15 points were not enough to secure first place in Group C. South Africa's superior goal difference and points meant they finished ahead, claiming the top spot and automatic qualification.
Nigeria's journey to the World Cup is not over yet. They will now compete in the CAF playoff mini-tournament, where the winner will advance to the FIFA inter-confederation playoffs. The team aims to avoid a repeat of their disappointment in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where they also missed out on automatic qualification.
